Fortunately, there is a lot we can do to prevent things from getting to this point. Scaling and root planing is a focused type of dental cleaning where we remove all of the bacteria buildup around the gumline and then smooth the roots of the teeth so that it doesn’t come back.

We’ll apply a topical fluoride solution to your teeth that is several times stronger than anything you’ll find in stores, and for younger patients, we can use something called silver diamine fluoride for spots where decay is starting to develop. This solution quickly kills the harmful bacteria while also strengthening the enamel, enabling us to fix minor cavities quickly while keeping the drill safely tucked away.

The teeth most likely to get cavities are the ones in the back. They are tricky to clean, and the deep pits and grooves are the perfect places for bacteria to gather and thrive. But with a dental sealant, we can essentially cover these teeth with a “raincoat,” or a thin, clear layer of dental resin. This is perfect for children still learning how to brush as well as cavity-prone adults.
